WELCOME 2011 - 12 CYBERCORPS STUDENTS!
How's everyone doing? Another exciting year of Cybercorps at North Valleys. On behalf of our Computer and Technology Department, I welcome all students, parents, and community members.
My name is Lance West. I have been teaching CyberCorps since 2003 here at NVHS. I've built the program from humble beginnings into the best CyberCorps lab in Washoe County. If there is one place a high school student can go to learn practically everything to SUCCESSFULLY pass both A+ exams, North Valleys is the place.
A little bit about myself: I was born in Reno, raised in Schurz on the Walker River Paiute Reservation. Schurz is a small town between Fallon and Hawthorne. I attended Yerington High School and graduated with my BA in Secondary Education, emphasis in Business Education from the University of Nevada in 2001. I'm currently working on my Masters degree in Educational Leadership at UNR.
The CyberCorps program has special meaning to me as I have seen the changes to the A+ exams evolve over the years. From being required to understand Windows 98 SE and floppy disk booting to Windows 7 and Solid State Drive (SSD) technologies. Technology moves at such a quick pace, that I cannot sit idly by, continually teaching the same content from year to year. Through constant research and acquiring the latest PC tech; I am able to offer high quality content to students.
I anticipate many students to enter this class with little to no computer experience, this is not a problem. We begin this course with a very basic structure and easy to understand terms.
If you ask any of my former students who've taken any of my classes, you'll find out that my classes are more than learning and demonstrating computer-related objectives. I engage students with a vast array of topics and issues that extend beyond the technology scope.
As a class, we will exceed any previous year's successes. I am excited and committed to working with all students in preparing them for success beyond high school with A+ certification. More details of this very important IT certification will be provided to students in the next two weeks.
That's all I have to say for now. Again, I am ready, ARE YOU?

grades UPDATED
all grades have been graded. Overall grades have dropped due to what? Thats right, textbook work. I rarely assign textbook work when I am in class, ONLY when I am gone and there's a substitute teacher is there ALWAYS textbook work assigned. is textbook work that difficult? I'm speaking to our SECOND year Cybercorps students, especially. Right now, our second-years are not doing so well.
Another drop in your grade is the low quiz scores, thankfully quiz scores don't really impact your overall grade, but regardless, if our exams are going to be based on ALL quiz questions, then you should probably review more. We'll work out the details in the next couple weeks.
I'll provide a grade printout when I see you all on Tuesday.

I'm working on updating grades
Three weeks into second semester and I'm already behind! No worries. I've been updating the gradebook all evening, along with some wow breaks. Quiz scores are a bit low, hoping to get all the word searches added to the gradebook tomorrow sometime. Everyone should know the routine regarding the class at this point.
I've come up with a great idea for the exams. I'm thinking we have at most three exams over this semester. Our first exam would includes chapters 13-17. The questions would be m/c along with a couple essays, AND, it would all be completed on Synchroneyes using previous quiz questions. I'd provide a review sheet of course. The expectation would be to assign the review sheet as homework and complete it using your notes. Pretty much I would copy/paste the questions to a word document, around 50 questions, two essays and give that to you in the form of an exam.
Second exam would probably be: chapters 18-21
Third exam would be: chapters 22-last chapter (26 i think).
Let me know what you think.
Enjoy your weekend
